LEA CIAMBELLI

Lea Ciambelli was born in Naples inl 1977, after her high school studies, her interrest and love of art took her to Florence where, almost by chance, she came across a course in mosaics. From this beginning was borna passion that drove her to develop her studies in the city of Ravenna, famous in the whole world for its byzantine mosaics.

Here she joined a professional course at the ”Albe Steiner”, school under the auspices of promosso the province of Ravenna under the guidance of several master mosaic craftsmen of Ravenna, during which she acquired the antique techniques including cutting by hand of the "tessere" (the individual elements of a mosaic) that she uses both for mosaics based on traditional subjects and her modern creations used in interior and exterior design.

She attended a 160 hour course held at one of the oldest art workshops in Ravenna, the "Cooperativa Mosaicisti" (Mosaic cooperative) founded in 1947 by a group of mosaic artists of Ravenna. During this course she took part in the creation of a Roman mosaic, a copy of the Villa di Tabarka, Tunisia.

She further developed her professional experience working at the "Cooperativa Mosaicisti" taking part in the realization of a copy of a Roman floor mosaic of the 3rd C. AD discovered in Luxemburg. The mosaic represents the poet Homer and the godess Calipso surrounded by the twelve muses. Both the original and the copy are made exclusively in marbles.

She then spent two years in Spain, at Madrid, where she took part in handcraft shows, personal and collective exhibitions, held courses and worked for private clients. Here she came under the influence of Gaudì and enriched her work with new materials such as the "azulejos" ( tipical Spanish hand painted tiles), stones, sea shells, metals, cloth, coloured pearls. She took part as well in the organization “Red de Arte Joven”, a young artists network that introduced her to the Madrid cultural center and gives her the opportunity to travel around Spain with itinerant exhibitions. Of particular interrest is the personal exhibition of Ronda, a famous small Roman town of Andalusìa, cited in a local journal. Furthermore she participated in the VIII Muestra del Regalo Artesano ( Christmas handcraft show) in 2001 in the Atocha station of Madrid.

In 2002 she felt the need for a return to origins, to Ravenna, to deepen and perfect her mosaic techniques. d
She was engaged by the "Cooperativa Mosaicisti" and had the opportunity to participate in large projects amongst which:
-the creation of the apse of the church of Santa Lucia in Reggio Calabria, in 2002, following a design by the artist Gisa d'Ortona and realized by a team of seven.
- extravagant tents, a life size mosaic decorating an ice cream shop in the "Piazza del Duomo" in Florence
- a geometric carpet 6 x 2 sq. metres at Ponte Vecchio in Florence.
In the workshop she had the opportunity to gain experience with diverse mosaic techniques, from copies of Ravenna mosaics, to tombstones, swimming pools, modern decorative panels, religious subjects, mosaic realizations of the works of past and contemporary artists.
Furthermore she teaches mosaic art to students of different nationalities, both artists and beginners.

Entirely her own is the design and realisation of :
- a shower room in contempoary style made from natural marblei (white “Perfil” and “azul Bahìa”) and decorated with elegant “water drops ” reproduced with river pebbles and elements of silver that reflect the light in such a way as to imitate the effect of water cascading down down the walls . The work was commisioned for a private house near Naples.

From January 2004 to May 2005 participated, thanks to the Cooperative and to the studio of the mosaic artist Alessandra Caprara, in a grand mosaic project, an apse of 250 sq.m. for the “The Church of Transfiguration” of Orleans, Massachussetts, USA based on a design of the Irish artist Hellen Mclean.
The installation of the work completed by a team of 7 people ( including Lea Ciambelli), took place in Aprile 2005 and required a month's work. The mosaic was inaugurated in June 2005 in concomitance with the celebration of the fifth aniversary of the church's founding.

In 2005 she partecipated in the production and installation for the ' Cooperativa Mosaicist' of some of the panels of the 14 panels describing the life of Christ in the 'Santuario Maria S.S. dello Splendore', Giulianova - Abruzzo.

In 2005 she published:
- 1x1 Kreativ Mosaik together with two German colleagues, Bruno Rodi and Catherine Massey, edited by the famous German publisher TOPP, volume entirely dedicated to the mosaic . Buy on-line at Amazon.de
