Mosaic course

The art studio “Pixel Mosaici” programs individualized mosaic courses, for single people or groups, both for beginners and those who wish to perfect their knowledge and techniques working with mosaics.
The courses give one the opportunity to discover an art both stimulating and inspiring, the student is given the possibility to create small works of art, simple objects such as mirrors, frames and small panels, or more complex works such as tables, reproductions of famous paintings or the student's own projects.
Small gift items or great works of art!

At the termination of the course the student will be allowed to keep the works produced, as well as being awarded a certificate of participation. At the request of the student a mosaic artist's kit (with the tradiotional toolsi ) will be available, to enable the student to put into practise the skills learnt in the workshop. The course includes a visit to the Ravenna monuments.

Classes can be weekly or monthly, full time during the year ( except on bank holidays), the schedule is 40 hours per week, but flexible to meet individual needs. languages of classes available are English, French and Spanish.

• Traditional course

This course is aimed at students wishing to learn the ancient mosaic tecnique as handed down by long tradition. We begin with a historical introduction, the student then learns the technique of cutting the elements by hand (using exlusively natural stone) and lastly we go through the indirect technique on temporary stucco with the aim of producing a copy of an antique mosaic.

• Advanced course

The course is aimed at students with some experience of the basic notions who wish to perfect their technique or realize their own projects using different types of materials such as marble, smalt glass gold and silver ( the materials used for the production of more than one project may be charged separately).

• Creative course

This course is aimed at those wishing to apply the mosaic techniques in the decoration of their own homes (recycling old objects or using new ones); those wishing to produce original and striking gifts, or quite simply those wishing to exercise their creativity in a new way.

Summer mosaic courses at the Agriturismo TABIANO

We are organizing summer mosaic courses at the "Agriturismo Tabiano" just 5km from Siena , immersed in the green Tuscan hills.

The mosaic artist Lea Ciambelli from Ravenna offers the opportunity to combine a pleasurable stay in the agriturismo (farm guest house) with learning the ancient art of Roman-Byzantine mosaic faithfully following the techniques handed down from the past.

We are proposing 3 types of course , developed according to the student's requirements:

• Complete mosaic course, 40 hours weekly (8 hours a day from Monday to Friday) includes a brief summary of the history of mosaics, hand cutting of the tesserae (individual elements of a mosaic) in marble, the direct technique on provisional stucco, removal and final laying of the mosaic, finishing.

• Brief mosaic course, 20 hours weekly (4 hours a day from Monday to Friday) based on the use of the indirect technique and the use of precut tessere in marble, or the mosaic covering of various objects. The student can choose between several themes to use as models or execute themselves.

• Course in mosaic furnishing, 10 hours weekly (5 Saturday and 5 Sunday), based on the mosaic covering of new objects or objects to be reused such as picture frames, mirrors, lamps, clocks owned by the student.

A certificate of participation will be awarded at the end of the course as well as a booklet specifying the techniques adopted and the course work carried out by the student.

Courses Program

The course will cover the following topics:

Short historical introduction to mosaic art and to its evolution and application in contemporary art;
Projecting the work;
Execution of the “ reticolo” from a personal or existing draft;
Preparation of bad of lime to print the chosen subject;
Choice and hand cutting of stones using tradional tools (cutter and hammer);
Realization of the mosaic on temporary bed;
Cover with water-soluble glue and several layers of gauze are spread and moulded over the surface of the mosaic, then lifting from the temporary bed of lime;
Application of the mosaic on final support;
Finishing.

Beginner and experts can attend the courses . Are different techniques for each course and for all type of difficult degree.
